Well, Strange Attractors surely was a lopsided episode. Sure, the ending was pretty entertaining, but the journey was… well, pretty plain. We certainly did not get the Heroes-style Halloween episode that NBC was promoting. We got a continuation of the character studies with just enough of Mr. Sullivan to entertain.
Personally, I was really looking forward to a Halloween episode of Heroes. With Heroes’ extreme focus on Claire these past couple of seasons; it’s really no surprise that her storyline came the closest to a ‘Halloween’ themed plot. It had all of the elements of a cheesy B horror movie – an abandoned slaughterhouse still equipped with hooks, a crap load of sorority girls, and, naturally, a scavenger hunt. Unfortunately, there simply wasn’t enough of this sort of thing to fill the whole episode. Of course, we did get Gretchen and Claire discussing their kiss some more, and what exactly it would mean to their relationship. I have to say that Claire not declaring the lesbianism wasn’t for her, and her willingness to leave it open was a nice way of showing us that Claire is still not completely sure as to who she is or who she would like to become. The writers’ play with the horror genre was overall a big flop, but Claire being outted gives us something to looking forward to.
In the meantime, Noah Bennet was attempting to fulfill his promise that everything would indeed be okay, even though Jeremy had been taken into the police’s authority. In a true throwback effort, Bennet called “one of them” in to assist him in his effort to uphold his promise. I’ve really never been that big of a fan when it comes to Tracy, and really felt that her involvement in this episode took away from it. I found it mildly annoying that she was used to counterbalance Jeremy, due to the fact that she, once, lost control of everything from her feelings to powers. That’s not taking into account the fact that she also killed many people just for the hell of it. I just don’t find her at all sympathetic. On the other hand, I liked what Samuel had to say to her, and I really thought it helped to deepen his carnival family. (If nothing else, you have to see this episode just for Sylar’s carnie outfit)! I really thought that the renegade police coupled with the large, angry mob could have really done with some proper building up. It really felt like they only added it as a means to an end.
I have to say, the battle for mind control between Sylar and Matt Parkman has really been a fun and cool twist in the last few episodes, but it was really a big part of the lopsided aspect of this week’s episode. Don’t get me wrong, there were some pretty dark aspects, like Sylar gaining control of Matt’s body long enough to have sex with his wife. Other parts, though, were just plain silly. I don’t deny that, theoretically, alcohol would drastically affect Matt’s mind due to the fact that it’s killing brain cells, but that doesn’t explain why Sylar groaned in intense pain every time Matt took a sip. It was velveta-cheesy. One could debate, after watching the full episode, that it was Sylar’s way of tricking Matt into passing out so that he could attain full control of Parkman’s body, but it was just so damn ridiculous to watch. Again, I felt like it was just a silly and not well done means to an end. I really feel like the writers just wanted to fast forward to a point in the storyline in which Sylar had complete control of Matt’s body. I liked the way it ended, but hated how we got there.
Lopsidedness aside, I did like how the episode gave us a further look into Samuel Sullivan’s character, despite the fact that he didn’t get that much screen time. It may sound crazy, but he’s actually turning into a very likeable and pretty relatable character. One could compare him to this series’ ‘Magneto’ due to his motives being right, and his actions being… debatable. Although I think we’d all agree that his blowing up of the police building was something we all wanted after they killed Jeremy. Is he a hidden hero? A deceptive villain? Perhaps he’s simply the best thing this season of Heroes has going for itself. I’m still not sure, but I’d place my bet on the last one.
