Review: 04×08 – Once Upon a Time in Texas

A quick bit of advice – never screw with the space-time continuum. It simply does not ever do well. But our Hiro, determined to undo the death of his former love, attempts to alter the past without causing damage to the entire history of the world as they know it. As a summary, it sounds nice. A pure love story of love lost with the chance to redeem it. The Once Upon a Time in Texas episode really had a plenty of potential by reacquainting us with not only a person we love, but his relationship with a waitress that we enjoyed watching. I could say that we were lucky that at least a part of this potential was met, but it’d be better to say that I felt disappointed and thought the story lacked quite a bit.

With all the time travelling done in the world of Heroes, there are plenty of worm holes left gaping open. For that reason, one might question why the writers keep relentlessly adding even more. While it seems as though the answer is clear – that time travel makes for an exceptional story – the writers don’t seem to fully understand what a huge impact all of Hiro’s time travelling would have on the world in which they live. For that matter, they don’t always seem to realize the impact that any of the character’s powers would have on the world at large. Without a doubt, the most important aspect of time travel is to have a thorough understanding of what exactly this or that will effect. In this episode, we were actually given a pretty good, if very loose, idea of what exactly Hiro could do and could not do in order to save Charlie without having a giant impact on the rest of the world’s already warped timeline.

While it was acceptable, I would start trying to debate the effects he has on the timeline in this particular episode. If you do, without a doubt you will find every single flaw. If you leave reality out of it and simply judged the episode based on what was presented in it, it was a pretty okay story. We find out that Samuel had a very deep interest in our Hiro, so it’s really no surprise when he is quick to offer advice and guidance to the often bemused Hiro. That is to say, Hiro could cause a massive amount of damage if anything went terribly wrong. Like erasing history, for example. Samuel Sullivan reacquainted Hiro with the idea that everyone has a destiny, and that destiny cannot be changed. Once everything was set, it was a fairly enjoyable experience. It was fun to watch Hiro attempt to manipulate the system by first shipping off a “paused” Sylar. Possibly even more entertaining was when he tried to speak to a past version of himself as “Future Hiro”, to ensure that everything he had already done in the past would still get done. In typical Hiro fashion, he forgot about Charlie’s (his girlfriend) aneurysm and ended up having to use Sylar to heal her.

As Hiro tried desperately to change a rather tragic part of his past, Samuel was constantly offering his assistance and even giving reminders for Hiro regarding what should be said to who. It was something of a large shock when Samuel’s true intentions were revealed. It turned out all he wanted was something to hold against Hiro for his own gain. As soon as Hiro rescued Charlie, Samuel nabbed her and hid her away in an unknown time. It was quite the villainous move, and a wonderful reminder that Samuel really does only look out for himself. He just needed Hiro to help him with a mistake in his past. Naturally I assume that others would agree with me in my stating that the apparent murder of Mohinder isn’t exactly a mistake.

But for all the entertainment Hiro’s story provided, I was disappointed with the episode’s focus on Noah Bennet and his office romance. It just didn’t feel right at all. Plus, once I considered how the first season was, with Noah so focused on putting an end to Sylar once he saw his daughter in one of Isaac’s paintings, I just couldn’t believe that he would really ever consider moving on with Lauren’s plan. Too, once I remembered the huge amount of tension surrounding Noah and Claire, it was odd seeing them being so buddy-buddy. It just didn’t seem right to me. I guess it’s to do with the timelines and Hiro’s messing around with them. Who knows? The near-miss romance is probably just getting us ready to see more to do with Lauren in upcoming episodes, but I found it just plain annoying in this one.

Even still, the episode wasn’t too bad. If you think of it more as just an hour of TV to kill time, it was even rather enjoyable. More action is always better in my opinion, so I found myself being a bit bored with this one.
