Review: 04×09 – Shadowboxing

I’m really starting to get annoyed with the serious lack of action in this season of Heroes. Character development is nice, but come on! Too much is too much and the story needs to pick up the pace! We’re eight episodes in, now. While the story had quite a couple of opportunities for action, it fell short when problems were solved with words rather than fists. While there still were some pretty interesting developments, I feel that it has gone from a wonderful mystery unraveling to a story that can’t quick dragging its feet.

I think perhaps the biggest problem with this episode was the outrageous amount of time we ended up spending with Emma and Peter in NY. A large portion of their “story” was Peter healing train crash victims, being drained of energy and power, taking a breather, and going at it again. But Peter, despite appearances, was not the focus of the story. Emma was. We got to watch Emma emit her very special power – the power of healing through medical practices. Whoopee. Don’t get me wrong, healing would be a great power to have, but it’s so damn boring to watch. Plus, it wasn’t all that shocking as we already knew that Emma had given up becoming a doctor. It wasn’t surprising, and it wasn’t a revelation.

HRG and Claire spend their time attempting to track down the dangerous Becky. They are desperately trying to find out why she attacked Claire and her sorority sisters just a couple of episodes back. It also provided Gretchen with a pretty passable exit story. She was simply terrified for her very life – as anyone might be. This was acceptable. I mean, who the hell would trust their life to Claire of all people? I also really enjoyed how the rest of Becky’s story unfolded. She started out as one of the many generic sorority sisters, and ended up one of Samuel’s carnies that just happened to kill Claire’s first roommate. This was done because she’s looking for revenge against Noah Bennet. I liked this especially because she wasn’t just some disposable character added to the story as a one trick pony out of convenience.

For the most part, Claire’s story just wadded along, though it did finally pick up near the end, when Bennet confronted Samuel in Miss Perfect’s dorm room. I was disappointed with the way it was revealed that Danko was the one who killed Samuel’s brother, seeing as that seemed to be the only reason Samuel was strolling down this dark path. But it was okay to see Samuel’s reaction to being manipulated by the ever-mentally-endowed Claire. Even still, he seemed to have the upper hand by the end of the affair. He allowed Noah to take him into his custody, and managed to get Becky to stop her attack. Due to this, Claire begins to feel some empathy for Samuel, which helps to further the wedge between Claire and the rest of the world. This wedge is driven even deeper when HRG knocks down his perfect Claire Bear in order to take a swing at Samuel.

When we finally get to see some Matt-Sylar action, we find that the angles are still pretty good. For some strange reason, Sylar could control the body, but Matt could control the ability. So pretty much all of their dueling is singular. At some points, Matt would play mind games, causing Sylar to drive his car over a sharp object and receive a flat tire. At others, Sylar would be making Matt brutally kill a completely innocent bystander. I think we know who won that scuffle. But just as all things seem lost for Matt, he makes a startling one-upsies and sacrifices himself in order to have Sylar executed by police. If you can ignore the gaping loopholes, it was a pretty okay episode.
