Like most Americans, people with special powers also celebrate Thanksgiving. Don’t worry, though, their Thanksgivings are just a dramatic and chaotic as us regular folks’. In the episode aptly titled “Thanksgiving”, we get to celebrate three different character’s Thanksgivings. Two of the three stories were pretty unexceptional, with only a couple of juicy bits, while the third had massive potential and some truly great moments. Unfortunately, it simply didn’t deliver well.
For starters, we have the carnies’ makeshift celebration. Hiro, who still considers himself to be Samuel’s prisoner, still pondered about the whereabouts of Charlie. He spoke to both Lydia and Edgar about his feelings, and both were shocked that Samuel didn’t have Hiro save Joseph. Hiro, with Lydia as company, then ventured 8 weeks into the past, only to discover that Samuel was the actual murderer in regards to Joseph. This seemingly huge revelations wasn’t exactly surprising. Even if you hadn’t considered the possibility before this episode, undoubtedly it crossed your mind when Lydia questioned it.
Watching the dynamics of the carnival change was quite interesting. We find ourselves now rooting for Lydia and Edgar, as they struggle to free themselves from the control of Samuel. While Hiro did indeed talk the talk in an attempt to discover Charlie’s location, he just simply could not back it up. Hiro is simply just too goodhearted, and lacked the courage to take the life of anyone (as if he could even find someone that Samuel cared about). The trek-esque ending was quite a surprise. Even though I heavily disliked the fact that it strongly reminded me of the episode “Child Hiro” from last season, Samuel’s reaction to everything was pretty classic. Let’s just hope that the whole “Child Hiro” throwback isn’t an indicator of where the show is going.
I really thought that the Bennets’ Thanksgiving was a huge waste of time, but it seems like Claire has to squeeze herself into just about every episode. After all, who doesn’t want to know all about the used-to-be-young sorority cheerleader? (Perhaps they should have a spinoff “The Claire Show” in stead?) Apart from Claire’s usual droning about wanting a place in which she could fit in, we had Lauren make an appearance. I wasn’t particularly enthralled by her previous appearance, and nothing changed this time. I sincerely hope that the writers are going to at least make this suffering worth while. However, the theft of the compass in order to locate the carnival was a very nice set up, and I’m quite interested in seeing how things turn out now that we have Gretchen again.
But of course, I’ve saved the best for last. Thanksgiving with the Perellis. Of course, we all expected this, but it didn’t make it any less entertaining. Angela was at first comforted by her sons after confessing/confirming that Nathan really was dead, and that Sylar had Nathan’s mind and memories. At first she avidly refused to admit anything, but eventually broke down and poured her out her heart and begged for understanding. It was most definitely one of Angela’s best moments. I was again impressed with Adrian Pasdar’s performance. He did a great job going from an inquisitive Nathan to a cruel Sylar. While the transformation from Nathan to Sylar was wonderful, I was much more blown away with the following conversation, which involved the Petrellis being stuck to their chairs. Sylar’s seeming admiration for Angela was chilling enough without the creepy kiss that followed.
It was very cool, and I just wish that it could have been more. Having the real Nathan fight for control over Sylar’s body was just way too easy and predictable. Some sort of action, even just seeing a couple of innocent bystanders get killed, would have been wonderful. Still, though, the episode served to give Peter a better understanding of his mother, and gave him all the more reason to get his brother back. With all of the tension-building, slow-paced episodes, it really feels like things are coming to a head. I can’t wait for the explosion!
