I had no idea that there wouldn’t be a new episode of our Heroes at all during the month of December until the very end of the episode, with the voiceover promo! Because of this, I began to think of “The Fifth Stage” as a sort of finale. After all, it is the last episode of Heroes for four weeks, at least. In the same situation, most television programs try to put out something outrageous – a true cliffhanger that no one can stop talking about, which will induce constant chatter, worry, and excitement until the next episode airs. It’s not all that surprising that Heroes had a different take.
Anticlimactically, the show continued on with its steady pace and story telling. Though the story telling was very precise, I was disappointed by Claire’s continued prattling. Honestly, who makes a twenty-one hour drive just to doubt themselves? After many careless decisions that Claire has made over the past seasons, it really wasn’t surprising that she decided to join the carnival. Even during her moment of self-doubt, she was easily persuaded by Samuel to join. At least that much happened.
Cunning Samuel and his carnival cronies were able to make Claire feel convinced to stay. Claire wasn’t put off by the carnies using their powers in order to entertain the masses. Ever the master of manipulation, Samuel made Claire feel as though she were really a part of the family almost instantly by having her read a bedtime story to the children. Some time later, he allowed himself to be beaten by an exceptionally angry carnival-goer, because he knew that she would jump in to help. This only furthered to solidify her bond with the family. While Claire seemed to think that Lydia’s tattoo signified having an act in the carnival, I tend to think it was a hint that she might become the secret superhero we all hope that she will be. But all was not fun and games. The dead man in the trunk gave us a chilling reminder of what sort of person Samuel really is.
Noah x Lauren is continuing its bland streak. The only purpose of showing them in this episode that I can see is that it further complicated their relationship. It really wasn’t a shock when Noah confessed to Lauren that they’d had a near-affair once before, but that she’d gone and “Haitian’d herself”. I’ve not really been a big fan of their storyline, but I did like the aesthetics of the replicating man. Alas, his time was short. His purpose was merely to get Bennet’s Primatech files. It just wasn’t all that thrilling, even though I have to admit that it does add to Samuel’s mystery.
I could go either way when it comes to Peter’s attempt to save Nathan from Sylar’s mind. I can honestly say that it had its positives and negatives. One of the highlights was that the fight between Peter and Sylar was epic. Peter really had something to fight for, and was most definitely not going to pull any punches. A nail gun, really? Can you say flippin’ awesome? Everything was going so great – then Nathan showed up. Que the waterworks! Sorry, but there wasn’t any buildup with Nathan to warrant a tear-drenched goodbye. I know I’m not the only one who expected a badass exit for the actor Adrian Pasdar when I found out he was being written out of the show. In stead, we had him go out with a whimper. No joking – I mean that literally. Even with that very bitterly disappointing aspect, I did enjoy watching Sylar walk away after Nathan’s deathly plunge.
Despite its shortcomings, I know I would have thought more highly of the episode if there was going to be another episode immediately following it. But I’m just not hooked and on the edge of my seat, desperately awaiting its return in January. Sure Samuel mentioned wanting to make a home, but that’s just not the type of thing you bring up to keep someone hooked. I guess better luck next time?
